Sometimes the best place to take a vacation is right in your own city! There is something really special about getting to experience your own city as a “tourist”. I am lucky enough to live in Brooklyn, NY and now that the weather is warming up, I am rediscovering what I love so much about this place.
Here are some things you can experience in nearly any city in the world:
Go To A Botanical Garden
Flowers are in bloom, trees are full of life, and now is the perfect time to check out your local botanical garden. Being surrounded by nature that is thriving, is a therapeutic experience.
Go To A Museum
Believe it or not, museums are all around. Even the smallest towns have museums and sometimes those are the most interesting. Whether you’re going to MoMA or your local historical museum, there is so much to be learned when immersing yourself in the history and culture of the world.
Take A Run On The Water
As it warms up, you might find yourself feeling sluggish or unmotivated to get your sweat on outside. If you have a pier or some sort of body of water near you, I highly recommend taking a run on the water. The breeze from the water will cool you down!
Go For Dinner In A Neighborhood You Never Go To, Or Just Try Out A New Type of Cuisine
This one is one of my favorites. We tend to get stuck in our routines, even where we go in our leisure time. Whether it’s eating the same foods, going to the same places, doing the same workout routine; the monotony of getting stuck in a loop can be detrimental to your physical and mental well being.
Go For A Picnic In The Park
Whether you like to go all out with a BBQ or prefer just a little wine and crackers, having a picnic in the park is a wonderful way to enjoy your town or city in a different way.
Take A Ferry To The City
Ferries are such a fun way to travel. They may not always be the most efficient, but if you have some extra time on your hands, taking a ferry is a nice way to relax and enjoy the scenery.
Take A Dance Or Yoga Class
Dance and yoga are my personal preferred ways of getting exercise in when I’m feeling uninspired at the gym. Both offer an immersive experience that can totally take you out of your head and into another world. Many also have great intro deals to get you in the door so you may even find a free one!
Go For A Long Walk With A Friend
I don’t know about you, but one of my favorite pastimes is talking with my friends while on a long walk. This is such a great way to get yourself moving and to enjoy your city in a very visceral way. Every time I go for a walk, even if it’s in the same area, I notice something new!
Go To The Library Or A Bookstore And Get Lost
I remember as a kid, I spent so much time at the library. As an adult, I think I must have forgotten libraries existed because I just one day stopped going! Libraries are often some of the oldest and coolest buildings in a town and the stories and knowledge they hold is astounding.
See a Live Show
We all know that music can take you to another place. Why not see if a band you like is in town soon or even check out some free music at your local bar or cafe?
Go Plant Shopping
Obviously, plants are a wonderful way to liven up your home and get some clean air in. Additionally, plant stores themselves are often other worldly and jungle-like. Even if you don’t buy anything, going to a plant store and checking out the foliage is a fun way to get out of your usual environment.
