Don’t Fear the Fitness Assessment
By Kristen Latteri
We know the words fitness assessment can be intimidating. Your mind might go to climbing the rope in gym class, or getting hooked up to various machines and sensors while running on a treadmill. Don’t worry— it’s a far cry from anything like that!
We want to share exactly what a fitness assessment at Pongo Power is, and why it’s so important.
What is a Fitness Assessment?
It’s an is an opportunity for you to share what you’re looking for in an exercise program, and for us to learn about you and see how you move naturally so we can design a plan specifically for your lifestyle and goals. This is a free, 55-minute session that can take place online or in person. We want you to feel comfortable and safe, and know you are in good hands.
Here are a few things that a Pongo Power fitness assessment is NOT: a workout, a test, a judgement, or a criticism. We will not be calculating your BMI. You will not be prodded with calipers, or weighed and measured. We will not be testing how fast you can run or how much weight you can lift.
Why is a Fitness Assessment so Important?
In order for anyone to create safe and effective programming for you, a health history and movement analysis must first be conducted. It would be impossible to create a program designed specifically for you and your unique needs without it.
Components of a Fitness Assessment
Tell us about yourself. The first part of our fitness assessment is getting to know you. What do you like to do? We want to know what experience you have with fitness and movement, what has worked or not worked for you in the past, and what you are looking for now. Each person has their own wellness story and their own unique reasons for seeking personal training. Tell us all about yours! Your Health History Questionnaire is a starting point for this conversation.
Let us see how you move naturally. The next step is for us to guide you through some non-strenuous movements so we can see how your body moves naturally. After listening to your health history and background, we’ll be able to adjust any movements so they are appropriate for you.
Tying it all together. We wrap up with a conversation that will result in creating a plan that is tailored specifically to you. You’ve shared your interests and goals, what you’re looking for in a personal training program, and we’ve seen how you move, so now we can start a conversation about how to achieve these goals in a way that works within your lifestyle. Goals are achieved through sustainable training, and a sustainable training program is one that fits your life and that you like doing.
While it can feel intimidating to take that first step of walking through our studio door or signing onto the Zoom meeting, it is absolutely essential for us to get to know you and see how you move so we can create a program that is safe, effective, and enjoyable. Our fitness assessment is not only the necessary first step in designing the best program for you; it’s also an exciting opportunity for you to learn about your body and discover your potential.
